I was first born of seven children June 22, 1942 in Toledo, to Dora Mae Shanteau Hinsey and William Mitchell Hinsey. My Siblings in order of birth are: Bonnie Lou Hinsey (Selving-Milhalloff), Gary Neil, Mitchell William, Rodney Dale, David Paul, and Michelle Anne (Smoot-Wilcox).
When just turning six years old, I was infected with Polio during the late 50’s epidemic. Several body parts were left weaken as well as a spinal curve. However, with the encouragement of my parents, I did activities most children do leading to much strengthening. I attended Flebach Grade School for “handicapped” children where small classes, individual attention and physical therapy gave strength to mind and body. I attended DeVilbiss High School, walking and carrying books, even climbing a fence as a shortcut. At DeVilbiss, I was involved in extracurricular activities including school plays behind and sometimes on the stage. I also joined a horseback riding club. My parents often offered our home for club parties.
After graduation, I attended and received a Chiropodist office assistant. Two weeks later after college graduation, I was offered a first grade teaching position on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona beginning the next week. I lived in San Carlos and nearby Glob for five years. I took classes toward a Master’s through Arizona State University. Classes were continued through TU and Eastern Michigan after my marriage to William Mc Kaney in 1970. At the end of the marriage in 1978, I returned to Arizona and taught in the Mexican American mountain community for several years. When purchasing a home in Apache Junction, I began teaching for the Mesa School District until my health caused a decision to retire and return to my family in Toledo.
After a few years of living with my parents and sister Shelley and her family, I purchased a wonderful home on 288th street here in Point Place. Here, I have been able to continue my involvement in family “Aunt Linda” life especially to Shelley’s children Michael, Joshua, Kimberly and Tiffiny, now all grown. They have given “grandmother” Shelley many grandchildren including Dominic, son of deceased daughter Kimberly, who now lives with Shelley and her husband Lewis “Tom” Wilcox.
My life has been very full and fulfilling in the past and continues as I have become more and more involved in learning about God, His love for us and what it means to be a child of God and Christian.
When we listen, we can hear God tell us what we can do in His ministry. I heard a call leading me to the development of Messiah’s Website at a time when there were few church websites in Toledo. This has been an awesome task, but one so worthwhile and helpful.
A memorial gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Road (At Jackman Road), Temperance, Michigan beginning at 12 noon with services at 2:00pm.
